Polish born, Melbourne-based Katarzyna Wiktorski is a pianist, composer, arranger, and producer.
Inspired by Andrea Keller’s Wave Rider and Linda Oh’s Aventurine she formed her first major group the
Katarzyna Wiktorski Octet in 2019. They sold out a performance at he Jazzlab in December, as part of the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival (in a co-presentation with the MJC).
Fusing an unconventional string quartet with a piano-saxophone jazz quartet, her music is influenced by classical, jazz, film music and contemporary sensibilities. Kat was determined to overcome the constraints of lockdown and persevered to make an ambitious four-track debut EP of original music. Featuring previously unrecorded pieces, she produced and directed her team of seven to record each layer of instrumentation to build the tracks.Since its release in November 2020, the EP has featured on national and international radio including BBC6, Bandcamp weekly and was included in The Guardian’s Best 10 Contemporary Albums of 2020.
To celebrate the vinyl edition of From a Distance EP, this show will include two sets of original music including new arrangements of isolation singles and new compositions.
